Best Man Teaser.jpg

Excerpt:

The dress is a strapless Carolina Herrera, with layers and layers of whisper-thin organza. It blows my budget and the “less is more” mantra out of the water, but like Eva said the day we bought it in downtown Denver, when you know, you know. The locale is the sumptuous Midnight Lodge, nestled in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, every tiny detail of the place costing my father more than an entire year of his salary. The twenty-three members of the bridal party are assembled. It’s the scene of every little girl’s fairytale fantasy.

My fantasy.

At least, the one I’d been harboring up until today, when everything changed.

Eva smiles at me. “Ready to make your dreams come true?”

I stare at myself in the mirror. I look like Cinderella, if the wicked stepmother had just materialized at the castle on Cinderella’s wedding day and gunned down Prince Charming in cold blood. I’m also about three minutes away from losing the mimosa I’d polished off earlier that morning at breakneck speed. I go to chew on my nails but then I remember Eva painted them, and the last thing I want is for him to see the chips.

He notices things like that. He’s an observer.

And I want to be perfect for him.

Him.

The wrong him.

Oh, god.

I go to chew on my lip, but I can’t do that because they’ve been lacquered with bubble-gum pink gloss, and he’d probably notice if I got it on my teeth, too. All my normal ways of freaking out are off limits.

This is the day of my dreams, the day I’ve planned to the letter, just so I could avoid any potential calamities that might make me freak out.

But I am freaking out. Oh, lordy, am I ever.

I’ve been waiting my whole life for this day.

This perfect day, where the sun is shining, the snow is melting, birds are singing, and the sky is the deepest blue I’ve ever seen.

But there’s a problem.

A problem in the form of a pretentious, bearded, six-foot-three wall of hot man flesh who stalks around hating the world and thinking he’s better than everyone in it.

My fiancé’s best friend. The best man, Miles Foster.

This is all his fault.

“You okay?” Eva asks.

“I am,” I insist, pushing the infernal veil out of my face for the thousandth time. “This dress is itchy as hell.”

I stand and pluck the dress up under my armpits, hoisting it over my boobs. I try to take a step but…too much fabric, in all directions. It’s a wonder I don’t drown in this sea. In this sea, or in this mess I’ve created for myself. I sit back down on the vanity stool and pout. “I’m stuck.”

In more ways than one.

She gathers handfuls of too much organza and helps me up, depositing the pile of fabric safely in my wake. I shuffle to the full-length mirror and glance at myself. I don’t look like a bride, or even a fairytale princess. I look like a prisoner who just got her death sentence.

“It’s too loose,” I whine. I never had much of a rack, and now it’s super obvious. Why did I decide to go strapless again? “I think I must’ve lost some boobage during my diet. What if the top of my dress falls down while I’m walking up the aisle?”

Eva smirks. “I’m sure Aaron’ll love the show.”

The thought makes the mimosa turn in my stomach. I used to live for what Aaron thought. Whenever I had a choice to make on something, be it a new movie coming out, or a sweater at the mall, or a new hair style, I’d think, Would Aaron like this? But I realize, as she says his name, that it doesn’t matter to me in the slightest what Aaron thinks. The only opinion I care about now is that of the man who will be standing precisely two feet to my husband-to-be’s left.

I am such an idiot.

In less than fifteen minutes, I will be marching down the stone steps outside the Midnight Lodge to a picturesque gazebo at the foot of the hills, on the arm of my father, who has socked his entire life’s savings into making this day picture perfect for his only daughter. I will take the hand of the man I’ve been attached at the hip to for over five years, ever since I met him in a dank frat cellar when I was a wide-eyed little college freshman. I will join with this man—this man I’ve spent all of my adult life with—in holy matrimony, ’til death us do part.

I will become Mrs. Aaron Eberhart.

But I know I’ll be looking past my husband-to-be to the man who, up until twelve hours ago, I’d thought I hated. Miles Foster.

And I will be wondering What if…

I wish choosing a husband was as simple as choosing a dress.

When you know, you know.

I did know, or I thought I did. Up until twelve hours ago, I thought Aaron Eberhart was my true soul mate, the one I’d happily spend the rest of my life with. That’s when things took an unexpected turn.

Right now? I don’t even know my own name.

And I have a feeling I might be making a huge mistake.

Review Test

I fell hopelessly in love with Katy’s work whilst reading Real and I have read and loved all her books. I am a massive fan, so you can only imagine how excited I was when I received an advanced copy of her new book, Best Man.

I was buzzing with excitement to get my hands on this book and jumped straight into it as soon as it appeared on my Kindle. Apart from taking my boys to and from school, I did nothing but sit with my nose in my Kindle for the entire day.

Lia is getting married to the love of her life; or so she thinks. But when her fiancé forgets their wedding rings at his apartment, Lia has no other choice but to drop everything to go and get them. Already stressed with planning the wedding, dealing with a hung-over fiancé, and now having to retrieve her rings, Lia is pushed to breaking point when Miles, the annoying and yet gorgeous one-night-stand that she has never gotten over, decides to jump in her car and go with her. Tension begins to rise, and truths are revealed. Lia starts to question whether her happily ever after lies with the groom; who’s been keeping secrets. Or Miles; the best man, who Lia cannot stop thinking about.

Best Man had some similarities to a few of my favourite reads, one of which was Thoughtless, starring my ultimate book boyfriend Kellan Kyle. Although there is no cheating involved with the main characters, there is a love triangle, and it doesn’t take long to choose a side. Mainly due the fact that Miles is amazing!! I liked him from the beginning and by the end was completely in love. He broke me in the best possible way. His pain and how he felt for Lia just gutted me.

I stare at him, shocked. “You disappeared for months.”

“Yeah. That’s how I deal with things. But I remember everything. Lia. Every damned thing. About you, that night, and about the way it tore me up the day I saw you with Aaron.”

Lia I didn’t care for that much, in fact the woman frustrated me. She walked around with these rose-tinted glasses on. I didn’t want her to get hurt but at the same time she was forgiving Aaron for things that had happened, and therefore allowing it to continue which I was not OK with.

I loved the flashbacks of Miles and Lia. I liked that we got to feel the connection and the intensity that these characters had with each other when they first met, their history and what caused this passionate animosity between them. Every scene between these two created some major heat. My heart was pounding throughout most of it, especially when Lia found out the truth.

I really enjoyed reading Best Man, and although it’s not one of my favourites, it still held my attention throughout. I love nothing else than getting stuck into a Katy Evans book, she never disappoints. I am so excited to see what she has up her sleeve for us next.

Light My Fire (Sex. Rock. Mafia. #1) by Jessica Ruben

Cover by: Okay Creations

NA Contemporary Romance

From Amazon bestselling author Jessica Ruben comes a hot new Romance…

He saved me from war.

Fed me when I was in too much pain to eat.

Smuggled me and my family into America when it became too dangerous to stay.

But, Nico didn’t flee with us.

While I began elementary school in the United States, he was building the greatest and toughest Mafia of the century.

The Mafia Shqiptare.

Nico is now King of all underground trades.

Sexy. Aggressive. Brilliant.

After years of nothing but silence, he’s back in my life,

Ready to do whatever it takes to bring me into his universe.

He isn’t leaving until he takes me with him.

EXCERPT:

“It’s your brother,” he says matter-of-factly. “But you probably knew that already.”

My stomach drops. Agron.

“It seems he’s been stealing from some of my associates.” His voice is completely devoid of any feeling. “He was dealing for them and keeping a little bit of product for himself. Sometimes, he used it; other times, he sold it. But after a while, people began to notice. He ran to the Shqipe for help.”

I want to blink, but I cannot move.

“I gave him the money to pay those debts. And now, I’m the one he owes. I figured I could use him to do some small-time work, get my money back that way.” He takes a sip of his wine, completely unfazed. “And then I hear, Agron wants a firm spot in my world. Gave one of my men a whole story that the Mafia Shqiptare is where he’s meant to be.

“As we both know, your brother has always been a loose cannon. Arguably, untrustworthy. I knew him when he was a kid, but I’m a firm believer that people don’t change.” He stops speaking, continuing to dig into his food.

Meanwhile, I’m worried mine is going to come back up. Hearing this about my brother isn’t a surprise, but it’s painful nonetheless.

I take another sip of my wine, hoping it will calm me or at least give the illusion I’m relaxed. Unfortunately, my hand trembles, and the glass shakes, giving me away. Nico notices, of course.

He clears his throat, putting his fork down. “There is something I need from you. And if you give me what I want, I’ll protect your brother from the other gangs by giving him a spot in the Shqipe. You do not have to agree to the arrangement. But if you do, there is no end to it until I decide it’s over.” He settles into a forward-lean position, big arms resting on the glass table and shirtsleeves pulled up to the center of his strong, corded forearms. Everything about him, from his body language to his words, spells dominance.

I open and then shut my mouth.

Nico looks me up and down, his gaze stormy and hot.

Is Nico going to ask me for sex? It wouldn’t be unheard of in these crazy circles. But I have a limit, and whoring myself out for the sake of my brother is a no-go. No. Impossible. Never.

“What I need is simple,” he continues casually, the look in his eyes extinguished. “There is a new family I’m aiming to do business with. They’re the type who like to work with men who are … settled down. I know how loyal you are to your word. We share a language and customs. You will act as my wife when I request it.”

“I have school.” I lick my lips. I can’t let go of my future. Not for Agron and not for anyone. I won’t!

“You can go back for your studies”—he nods—“finish your degree. But when I call, you must come.”

“This arrangement,” I start, pointing between himself and me, “it’s just for public purposes, r-right? Nothing private you’re expecting or illegal?” I can’t help my stutter. I want to stay strong in the face of all of this, but it’s getting difficult.

Nico looks over my shoulder, and I turn my head, finding no one behind me. When I refocus on him, he’s fuming. He knows what I’m insinuating.

He grits his teeth. “You aren’t my whore, Elira. And I’m not going to ask you to do my dirty work either.” His eyes are hard.

Is he offended?

“Take my proposal at face value.” He finishes his drink. His huge hand places the delicate crystal glass on the table. “There is no hidden agenda. You pretend to be my wife, come when I call you, and act as I expect, and in return, I will bring your brother into my fold, making sure that no outsider kills him. If you walk away, he’s on his own.”

“He wants to work for you. He will do a good job for you.” I swallow hard.

He cocks his head to the side, like he’s calling bullshit. “Agron’s best asset is that he is related to you.”

I shift, but the weight of my body feels like it’s doubled. “And if he’s within the Shqipe, the other groups won’t be able to touch him?”

“That’s right.”

Quiet descends upon our discussion, but my mind shrieks. The skeptical part of me is on questioning overdrive. “What kind of events would be required of me?”

He takes another bite of food. “We’d travel. Dinners. Things like that.”

I wait to hear more, things along the lines of dungeons and sex slave, but thankfully, it doesn’t come. “So, all I have to do is pretend we’re married?”

He nods. “Yes. Exactly.”

“But what about when this business thing you need me for is complete? What will happen to Agron then?”

His lips quirk up. “You’re very loyal, Elira.”

“He’s my brother.” What else can I say? I want and need Agron to stay safe and alive. This is clearly his best shot.

“We’ll cross that bridge when it comes. I would take this offer then if you are so keen on making sure he stays out of trouble.”

“You’ll swear to that?”

“My oath is my bond.”

I know he’s telling the truth. For people like us, honor is everything.

I wait for him to elaborate some more, but he doesn’t. Surprisingly, I feel my nose twitch. I was expecting him to mention something, anything, about before. About what we had. But he doesn’t. And I’m not about to either. I just want to get the hell out of here. I want to go back in time and tell myself not to have that damn cigarette. I wish I’d flagged Jack down when he was circled by those girls and claimed him for myself. Instead, I made one fucking choice, and now, here I am, in front of Nico, my life on crazy ground.

“It’s late.” Nico shifts in his chair. “You’ll stay tonight and think. Tomorrow morning, give me your answer. Regardless of what you choose, I’ll have my car bring you back to school.” He stands up, twisting the fancy gold watch around his wrist. “When you’re finished eating, Maria will bring you back to your room.”

“I want to leave tonight.” Some of my bravado from before is gone. Beneath the strong girl is plain me—a college kid from Tobeho. Here is the last place I want to stay.

“Until I have your answer, you aren’t allowed to take one step out of my sight.” He stands up to his full menacing height, and in this moment, he truly scares me. He doesn’t give a shit about what we had—that much is clear.

I force myself upright, refusing to cower.

Seemingly satisfied, he walks away.

“What an asshole,” I curse under my breath.

He snaps, “What did you call me?” His stubborn jaw gives him a stony expression.

My stomach drops to my knees.

“Something to remember.” He saunters back to where I sit. “I will not be seen with a woman who doesn’t look polished or well-raised. I know who you are and where you come from. Act like the woman you ought to be or forget the deal.” And with those final cutting words, he’s gone.

Review Test
“And don’t even try to run. This entire place is fortified. And even with all the security I’ve got, if you were to get away, I’d scour the ends of the earth to find you,” he threatens.

I don’t know where to begin writing my review. I finished reading Light My Fire late last night, and I cannot find the correct words to describe how utterly amazing this book was. I could praise and love on it all day long to anyone with a pair of ears/eyes, but I just don’t feel like I can do the book justice.

Light My Fire has been my most anticipated read of the year, and Jessica Ruben totally smashed it!!

The book evoked every imaginable emotion known to man, there was a moment when I was lying in my bed sobbing, then in the next, feeling all hot under the collar from the intense chemistry that these characters stirred.

“Who do you belong to?” he asks.
“You,” I whisper, a beg trailing behind my voice.

I love the bond that Nico and Elira have, the trust, the honesty, and the loyalty was what made their connection so strong and therefore unbreakable. The story just called to me on so many levels. I was there, I was completely engulfed in their entire affair, and I did not want to leave.

Just one of the many things I love about Jessica’s work, is that from the very first page, you are thrown right into the story. I need this. I have a very short attention span. If the book doesn’t grip me within the first two chapters, I do tend to switch off. I know I am not alone in this, so I’m hoping you can relate when I say how important it is for a book to capture my attention from the start. Jessica Ruben has accomplished this with all her work, which I am incredibly thankful for, as she has quickly become an insta-one click author for me. I don’t even have to read the blurbs anyone more, because I know it’s going to blow me away.

I could rattle on about how incredible Light My Fire is until the cows come home, and how desperate I am for the next instalments release, but I must wrap this review up. All I want to say is, you have to read this book. You HAVE to read this book. If you are a fan of the Vincent & Eve series, then you are going to love this. I didn’t think it was possible, but I actually love this book more. It may have something to do with Nico…oh who am I kidding, it has EVERYTHING to do with Nico!! That man, oh my lord, he is just so intense. I love him.

Light My Fire is not the type of book that you buy and then let sit on your Kindle for half the year. It’s the book you pre-order, refresh your Kindle continuously until it appears on the screen, then lock yourself away, and lose yourself within the pages of the greatest book you will read this year.

Review Test

If you’re ever looking for a book that will completely knock your socks off, look no further than Samantha Young. I don’t know how she does it, but every book Sam’s written, she’s knocked it out of the park.

I have been a HUGE fan of her work from the moment I read On Dublin Street, and I have pretty much read every book she’s released since. Before Jamaica Lane being my absolute favourite, and I have re-read that book more times than I have had hot dinners.

I have had the very great privilege to read and review all the books in the Hart’s Boardwalk series, and I have loved them all. Whilst reading I have connected with the characters and then been desperate to read their stories. First it was Cooper and Jess in The One Real Thing. Vaughn and Bailey in Every Little Thing, and Michael and Dahlia in Things We Never Said. Vaughn and Bailey were favourite characters, but that soon changed after reading Michael and Dahlia’s story. Oh my word, I can’t even begin to explain how much I loved and devoured this book. The only problem now is that I am desperate to get my hands on the next couple’s book, and I am praying it’s going to be Emery and Jack. I need their book like I need my next breath.

Samantha Young completely wrecks me with her words. Her books are addictive and gut-wrenching, beautiful and compelling, and I love nothing more than losing myself within the pages of one of her stories.

Things We Never Said deserves ALL the stars.

We were supposed to be best friends

But turned out to be worst enemies…

Penn

They say revenge is a dish best served cold.

I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart is completely iced.

I took her first kiss.

She took the only thing I loved.

I was poor.

She was rich.

The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.

Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.

Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.

Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.

There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.

Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.

Daria

Everyone loves a good-old, unapologetic punk.

But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.

The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.

In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.

Four years ago, he asked me to save all of my firsts for him.

Now he lives across the hall, and there’s nothing I want more than to be his last everything.

His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.

Now? Now he is making me pay.

Excerpt:

“I don’t want you transferring into my school,” I hiss out. Melody would gladly file a transfer request, and Principal Prichard would salivate over the chance to snatch him up for our football team.

“That won’t be a problem. You guys suck so much ass, you have shit-breath.”

“Still smells better than poverty. You’re poor, right? Your sister was just bullshitting about being rich.”

When someone hits me with a stick, I run over them with a tank. I’m so mean to him I want to throw up. I hate this part of being me. The striking harder at all costs part.

“Just to make things clear.” I put the brush down, batting my lashes. “You’re not my step-sibling, foster brother, or a part of the family. You’re a stray dog. Last of the litter, most unlikely to be adopted, and a charity case.”

Penn takes a step toward me, and my heart is fighting its way out of my ribcage. The closer he gets, the more I realize that my heart might succeed. Penn’s eyes remind me of a snake’s. Mesmerizing, but inhuman altogether. They weren’t like that before.

His scent messes with my head. I want to reach out and caress his face. Kiss his wounds better. Beg for forgiveness. Curse him. Push him away. Cry on his shoulder for what we’ve done. For how it ended. For what we became afterwards, because I’m full of crap and he is totally empty.

We ruined ourselves the day of our first kiss.

Penn looks down at me. Time stops. It feels like the world is losing gravity, falling into a bottomless depth in space when he clasps my chin with his thumb and finger, lifting my head up. I can’t breathe. I’m not sure I want to, either. My towel drops to the floor with a thud, even though I secured it over my chest. I realize that he tugged at it intentionally. I’m naked. My body, my soul, my heart. All my walls are down. Somewhere in my head, a red alarm blasts and my inhibitions are getting armed, ready to fight back. I’m trying to decode his expression. He is amused, irritated, and…playful? The mixture of emotions doesn’t make any sense.

“Mess with me, Followhill, and I will ruin you.”

“Not if I ruin you first.”

Review Test

OK so I think it’s safe to say that every book Jessica Ruben writes is going to instantly become my favourite read of the year.

It happened with the Vincent and Eve series, and now with Warrior Undone.

Last year Jessica’s debut series Vincent and Eve took the top spot for Best Read of the Year for me and has become one of my all-time favourites. I couldn’t wait to see what the author had up her sleeve for us next, so you can probably imagine how excited I was when I heard that Slade was getting his own book.

Warrior Undone isn’t sunshine and rainbows. It isn’t about two people who meet, instantly fall in love and live happily ever after. It’s ugly, it’s heart-wrenching, and is crammed with real and raw emotion. Everything that Slade went, and is going through, all the heartache and guilt that he feels. You as a reader feel it too. Every. Single. Moment.

Slade is a former Navy SEAL, who is suffering from severe PTSD. He doesn’t realise this, and therefore convinces himself that things will get better naturally. After a one-night-stand that ends with Slade choking his date until she blacks out, he decides to take matters into his own hands by self-medicating. Slade is in deep denial, and with his conflicted feelings towards Lauren, his life begins quickly spiralling out of control.

This book is everything I could have hoped and wished for from Jessica’s next novel. It is so incredibly sexy, and intense, and damn right addictive. Nobody on God’s green earth could have pried my Kindle from my hands. I was completely and utterly submerged in Slade and Lauren’s world, the chemistry that these characters have with each other is so immense and intoxicating. I didn’t want it to end.

If you haven’t already read Jessica’s previous books, you need to get on that pronto!! Seriously you are missing out, this is one author whose books will blow you away with how talented she is. I am so giddy with excitement; I can’t wait to see what Jessica has for us next.
